The most famous authors from the environs of the Dales are the Brontë sisters

Literature
Although not associated with the major figures of British literature, the Yorkshire Dales do boast many examples of the written word.  The most famous authors from the environs of the Dales (although they are from just outside the National Park in Haworth) are the Brontë sisters. More recently, James Herriot has introduced the Dales to a worldwide audience through books and television.

There are many 'dialect poets' from the Dales. These include John Thwaite (died 1941) of Hawes in Wensleydale and Thomas Blackah, a self-educated lead miner in Nidderdale, born 1828, died in Leeds in 1895. He wrote:

Coom, don on thy bonnet an' shawl,
An' straighten thy cap an' thy hair;
I's really beginnin' to stall
To see thee sit dazzin' i' t' chair.

Another notable wordsmith was Kit Calvert, a poet and scholar from Burtersett in Upper Wensleydale, and shown in the image.  One of his works was the translation of the Bible into 'Wensleydale'.

Yorkshire Dales Workshops

Yorkshire Dales Workshops

A small not-for-profit organisation working to promote awareness, appreciation and participation in Folk Arts in the community, YDW has helped to establish and develop community choirs, ceilidh bands and dance clubs, as well as encouraging young performers, players, singers and dancers at all levels. This has been, not only with the help of grants, but also with a tremendous amount of help from many who have given hours of free labour to enable us to make things happen. We are profoundly grateful to all of you who have helped.
