Buildings that define the character of the Dales

Vernacular Architecture
There are a number of buildings and other constructions that are particular to both the Yorkshire Dales as a whole and also to individual dales.  These serve to define the character of the each area.

Swaledale is particularly known for its field barns, but they do appear in Wharfedale, as shown in the image of barns near Grassington.

The stone walls which define field boundaries have been built using the stone of the Dales and are constructed in different ways according to their location.  Other vernacular achitecture includes crook-framed buildings and industrial works such as lime kilns and lead mining features.
